Once you’ve acquired your water tank, the next step is to plan its installation. Following various recommended practices is crucial to ensure the safety of your water storage system. Moreover, it’s vital to consider your intended use, as it will determine the required equipment and whether you’ll handle the installation yourself.
The process of installing a water tank becomes simple once you’ve clarified its purpose.
Below is a Concise Procedure that I Found Particularly Easy to Follow:
- Prepare the tank foundation – There are two options for preparing a foundation: concrete or compacted material.
For a Concrete Foundation: Pour a 3-inch reinforced concrete slab that is perfectly level and flat in all directions, extending beyond the tank’s diameter or base dimensions. Before pouring concrete, ensure the soil base is properly compacted.
For Compacted Material: Create a 3-inch pad using compacted crusher dust or road base, extending at least 24 inches beyond the tank’s diameter. The tank base should be free of rocks, stones, or any sharp objects that could damage the foundation. Thoroughly compact the base and ensure it’s level and flat in all directions.
If replacing an old tank, this step should have already been completed. However, for a new installation, provide either a concrete or compacted material base larger than the tank’s base diameter and ensure it’s level in all directions to prevent future issues.
- Install the overflow drainage pipe – If your tank is from Enduraplas, the fitting may already be in place. Connect the piping to the stormwater drainage system or direct it away from the tank’s base to prevent undermining.
Usually, the overflow comes pre-installed in your new tank. However, if it’s not, there’s no need to worry as the process is simple. You’ll just need to drill a hole for inserting a gasket (and sometimes a filter). Securing the fixture also involves drilling some screws. This ensures water can drain out, reducing the risk of foundation erosion.
3. Install your roof fill pipes – This is the time to connect the pipe from your roof to your tank lid. If you plan to use the water for human consumption, we recommend consulting your local dealer about necessary filters. Also, it’s important to ensure your filter basket is securely attached to the tank lid.
Whether your catchment area is on the roof or near the ground, the water tank plays a crucial role in collecting and storing rainwater efficiently.
The placement of a water tank is vital to maximize its usefulness. When deciding where to place your water tank, consider factors such as tank dimensions, property size and space, pipework and plumbing setup, and the aesthetic appeal of your property.
Tank Sizing
Once you’ve settled on the dimensions of the tank, the next step is to evaluate your property’s size and available space.
Property Size and Space
Regardless of the type of tank you’re considering, it’s crucial to consider the available space since every tank requires adequate room, especially if it’s to be installed above ground. Additionally, assessing the available space helps determine whether an above-ground tank is feasible or if space limitations necessitate an underground tank.
Property Aesthetics
For some individuals, the presence of a water tank on their property may be undesirable, despite its importance in meeting daily water needs, with or without restrictions. Therefore, it’s important to minimize the visibility of the tank.
Piping and Plumbing Infrastructure
Position your water tank near your downpipes; although this may limit your placement options, it enhances water storage efficiency.
